| Breaking News | | Friday, August 28th, 1936: Gun Barrel City Wins Round 1! The 1936 Round 1 is history and the TEX Triple A has added another champion to its record book.
Gun Barrel City prevailed over Kayenta today and wrote their names in it with a 7-6 victory at Forbes Field. It was the Homesteads 1st time to claim the title.
They compiled a 77-53 regular season record and finished up in the first spot in the South pennant chase. | | Sunday, August 23rd, 1936: Malabe Fires Shutout in Warthogs Win Jesús Malabe was sneaky fast, on the mark and hard to hit today. He blanked the Gun Barrel City Homesteads 5-0 on 2 hits and had 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
"You know what he's going to throw. You know what to expect. And you still can't hit it," the Gun Barrel City skipper told reporters after the shutout loss to the Kayenta Warthogs.
"He just had a real deceiving fastball today and he was throwing it for strikes."
This season to date Malabe has a record of 15 wins and 5 losses with a 3.89 ERA, has appeared in 30 games and struck out 47 in 171 innings. | | Saturday, August 8th, 1936: Homesteads Held Hitless by Merlos Is it better to be good -- or lucky? After his 2-0 no-hitter over the Gun Barrel City Homesteads he responded, "I don't know," said Coacalco's Blackie Merlos with a grin. "To do what I did, I guess it takes both."
On his historic day at Whipsaws Ballpark Merlos made good pitches the entire game, fanned 4 and had 1 walk. When the Homesteads hit the ball hard, they hit it right at someone for an out.
But that's how you get a no-hitter -- a lot of skill mixed with a little luck.
Up to now Merlos has compiled an ERA of 2.70 with a 13-10 mark over 26 starts. He has 92 strikeouts in 207 innings and has held opponents to a .258 batting average. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 3-1, .750 PCT | | Position in Division | 2nd, 1.0 GB | | Record at home | 2-0, 1.000 PCT | | Record on the road | 1-1, .500 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 0-1, .000 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 0-1, .000 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 1-1, .500 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 2-0, 1.000 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 3-1, .750 PCT | | Record in April | 3-1, .750 PCT |
