| Breaking News |  | Wednesday, September 9th, 1936: West Names Best Hitter Ken Stinson went on a season-long hitting spree against West pitchers and captured the Outstanding Hitter Award for 1936.
The Payne center fielder battered the opposition for 126 hits, 26 doubles, 5 triples, 18 home runs, 71 runs batted in and scored 103 runs. He hit .298 and posted a .418 on-base percentage.
For being named the SAAAA's top hitter, Stinson will be honored at the SION Baseball Writers awards banquet this weekend. |  | Wednesday, August 26th, 1936: Payne Takes Title Another page has been added to the SA Triple A record book. The Payne Pirates have won their 1st league championship with a 10-1 win against the Hialeah Turmoil.
They took the Round 1 3-1 in games this season.
In regular season play Payne finished with a record of 89-41 and ranked first in the West. |  | Tuesday, August 18th, 1936: Calkins Slaps 5 Hits The Pirates whipped the Valley Cats 13-6 at Payne Grounds and Terry Calkins had a big hand in the win. The Pirates shortstop came to the plate 6 times and collected 5 hits. It was a good day for Calkins and a tough day for Ferrysburg.
"I just go up there and whale away and hope it hits the barrel of the bat," he said. "There really isn't any plan."
Plan or not, Calkins delivered today -- 5-6 is outstanding in any league.
T. Calkins struck out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run single in the 5th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.
