| Breaking News |  | Tuesday, August 18th, 1936: Calkins Slaps 5 Hits
The Pirates whipped the Valley Cats 13-6 at Payne Grounds and Terry Calkins had a big hand in the win. The Pirates shortstop came to the plate 6 times and collected 5 hits. It was a good day for Calkins and a tough day for Ferrysburg.
"I just go up there and whale away and hope it hits the barrel of the bat," he said. "There really isn't any plan."
Plan or not, Calkins delivered today -- 5-6 is outstanding in any league.
T. Calkins struck out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run single in the 5th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.
Calkins is currently batting .300 with no home runs and 48 RBIs.

"I felt great out there. After the second or third inning, I got real comfortable," Nathaniel Harrison said in his postgame interview. "Hopefully this is a building block for me. I'm hoping for a few more starts like this."
The Ferrysburg hurler scored a 2-0 shutout victory over the Maples, stopping them on 3 hits. He rung up 2 strikeouts and gave up 4 walks in today's performance.
