Tuesday, September 29th, 1936: Barons KO's Pelicans
1936 has been good to the Birmingham Barons. Not only did they end up in first place during the regular season with a 103-51 record, they were the Southern Association champions. The Barons won the Southern Series for the 2nd time.

A 12-4 triumph over the New Orleans Pelicans at Rickwood Field brought home the trophy to Birmingham. They won the series 4-3.
Monday, September 28th, 1936: Birmingham Shut Out by Condon
In an almost effortless performance, Ely Condon of the Pelicans shot down the Barons 3-0 on a 2-hit shutout.

His skipper said, "Ely was just locating so well and using his pitches...not leaving anything over the plate."

Condon recorded 2 strikeouts and 1 walk in a strong outing.

In the postgame press conference, the Birmingham manager said, "When he needed to make pitches, he elevated his game like he can and we couldn't get a key hit off him."

This year Condon has fanned 77 in 281.1 innings and collected a 25-6 record with a 3.14 ERA.
Friday, September 25th, 1936: Mayer Shuts Out Pelicans
The Pelicans manager was philosophical after his team was shut out by the Birmingham Barons 3-0.

"It was just one of those games, shake it off and do better next time," he said.

Suds Mayer blanked them on 4 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs. They were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Mayer said.

"I set them up pretty good, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."

So far this season, Mayer has logged a 23-3 record with a 1.91 ERA. He has started 31 games, hurled 249.2 innings and registered 157 strikeouts and 42 walks.
